Graigwen Roads and Pavements Petition

GraigwenWe, the residents of Graigwen in Pontypridd, are calling on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to urgently address a number of issues affecting Graigwen. These include:

  1. Speeding: This is an issue that affects Graigwen Hill and also streets around the various estates, particularly Mayfield Road, Whiterock Avenue, Whiterock Drive, Whiterock Close and Mayfield Road. There have been a number of collisions and animals killed, and it is only a matter of luck that we haven't suffered a fatality. We need traffic calming measures as a matter of urgency and request that the Council shares a plan with residents on how they will deliver the changes required. We also need safe crossing points in the middle of Graigwen Hill, between the houses up from the shop to Pantygraigwen and the streets opposite.
  2. Pavements: the quality of many of the pavements are dire, with many not upgraded since the estates were built. The pavements in upper Graigwen are particularly bad and need to be renewed. We request that the Council share with residents their plan for delivering the changes needed, to improve the safety of our paths.
  3. Parking: Parking on pavements and near junctions are major issues of concern, and we would like to see the Council take a more proactive approach to stop people from doing both. More double yellow lines are also needed on the hill, to stop dangerous parking and more done to stop people from parking on pavements and forcing pedestrians into the road when walking around the area.
  4. Bus service: We urgently need a review of the bus service, so that the service is improved and the route extended to the top of Graigwen and that hours are also extended. We also need bus stops that provide shelter from the rain and urge RCT Council to work with Pontypridd Town Council to improve the one on Whiterock Avenue which provides no shelter when it rains at present due to the fact that it has no sides.

Please listen to our views and improve the safety and connectivity of our community.

THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON TOO LONG, SPEEDING ON GRAIGWEN ROAD IS MORE THAN DANGEROUS, SOMETING WILL ONLY BE DONE WHEN SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. ALL OF GRAIGWEN SOULD BE A 20MPH ZONE.

Pavments are a disgrace consider how much council tax we pay. Also there is a post situated in the middle the path half way up Graigwen Road which make people with prams needing to go on to the road in between cars to get past

I totally agree with all the above and in fact wrote to the Council regarding the state of the pavements on Graigwen Road on 26/07/2019 case number 101005162963. Part of my complaint regarding the street light covered in Ivy etc was resolved, however, the pavement issue is still outstanding.

I have complained to the Council many times in the past about the state of the roads and pavements in Graigwen.

I believe we pay the highest Council Tax in Pontypridd but get very little for it. We are lucky to see a road sweeper in Llanwonno Close once a year. The roads and pavements in this street need doing as well. All we have had is patching on Graigwen Hill.

The Bus service is a joke and should come up as far as Whiterock Close and times regular. There are many older people living in Graigwen as well as younger people and no way can they walk up the hill if the bus decides not to turn up, like has happened in the past.

Tyfica Road desperately needs speed bumps. Between 31 Tyfica Road and Coed Y Lan Primary School there are no less than 20 school age and younger children (with another soon to be born) living in the street, using the street to commute by foot to the various schools in the area and bus stops to catch school buses. On top of that are all the children from nearby streets who commute by foot to schools locally including the school on Tyfica Road. These children also play football, ride bikes, skateboard etc in the street. How there has not been an accident or a fatality in the street is pure luck. Speed bumps are paramount to keeping our children safe. A zebra crossing by the school and at the mad junction between the two sides of Tyfica Road would be useful as well as one on Graigwen Road hill around by Pavia Court flats for the children and parents that risk their lives crossing that bonkers road several times a day on the commute to YGG Evan James.

It’s not much to ask to keep our children safe from maniac drivers and those too busy on their phones to concentrate on the road.

Why hasn’t Tyfica Road got speed humps, lots of children and a school? Cars constantly reaching speeds 40+ mph.

Ponty must be losing a fortune with people parking on graigwen to avoid paying fees in town.

These have been ongoing and worsening problems for years. They need addressing.

I had the council/traffic area out a few years ago to ask for a mirror on Graigwen Rd opposite Mayfield Road which they refused. It is impossible to see up the hill and traffic speeds down at an alarming rate, getting worse as the years goes by.

The speed that vehicles drive down Mayfield Rd as they approach Graigwen Road is absolutely shocking. Also the speed they drive up the and down the main hill. The whole area would benefit from traffic calming measures.

The pavements and crossing point at Pantygraingwen Rd / Graigwen Rd junction is too dangerous
